Theory and Hazard Perception test
You can start driving lessons before you pass your theory test but you will not be able to to book the practical test without a theory test pass certificate.
What does the theory test involve
![]() | The
theory test is a computerised exam in two parts. You will need to pass
both parts in order to be successful. It is usually taken at a different centre
to the practical test. In the first part of the exam you must answer 50 multiple choice questions in approximately 1 hour. |
The theory test questions include a wide range of subjects including road traffic signs, rules of the road, vehicle safety, attitude, safety margins etc
This section of the test also now includes a case study. The case study will show a scenario of a real life situation that drivers could encounter when driving. Five questions will be based on this scenario.
![]() | The second part of the exam tests your hazard perception skills. There are 14 video clips of real life road scenes displayed on the computer screen. You have to click when you see a hazard developing. One of the clips will contain two hazards, the others contain one each. |
![]() | Each clip is about one minute long and you can score a maximum of five points for each of the 15 hazards shown. The earlier you spot the hazard the higher you will score. You must score 44 or more out of 75 to pass. |
How do I study for the theory test
There are apps available and your instructor can advise a suitable study/DVD package to assist with this. It is a good idea to study for the theory test at the same time as taking practical lessons as this will allow you to put the theory into practice. | ![]() |
On passing your theory and hazard perception test you have two years in which to pass your practical driving test before the theory test expires. |
